Colombo National Museum

The country's largest museum

The Colombo National Museum, often known as the Sri Lanka National Museum was founded in 1877 and is Sri Lanka's largest. The Department of National Museums manages the museum, which houses important collections for Sri Lanka, such as the regalia of the Kandyan monarchs and many other exhibits relating to the country's cultural and natural legacy. Sir William Henry Gregory, the British Governor of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) at the time, was its founder. When Gregory was appointed governor in 1872, The Royal Asiatic Society (CB) was instrumental in bringing the necessity for a public museum to Sir Gregory's attention.
